SMS Trojan Making its Rounds on Android

Author admin    Category General, News     Tags , , ,

Red alert! An SMS trojan has been detected running rampant on Android devices, says security watchdog Kapersky. The virus comes disguised as a media player in the package MS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a and, once installed, will send out texts to expensive premium numbers, racking up a high phone bill and gains for scammers. While previous reports saw isolated viruses and spyware, this is the first instance of a wide-spread trojan spread about the Android ecosystem.

As a protective measure, the Android Market always asks for certain permissions before installing an application. Pay close attention to any apps that may request access to your phones messaging system, especially if they come from untested sources. A specific perpetrator was not named, though chances are the spyware is coming from multiple fronts, with some applications carrying it remaining unidentified even at this point.

This marks one more area where Google could greatly improve the Android Market. Sure, there are benefits to a completely open for submission market, but when it comes to software with malicious intent slipping out onto unsuspecting phones we are left wanting even the most basic of screening processes.

Can you install any app on an Android device?

Author admin    Category General     Tags , ,

Question by incubuscsg: Can you install any app on an Android device?
I just read an article saying how Google had taken all Tetris-style games off of the Android store. I was considering buying an Android phone in the future and thought that Android was different in that you could install any application unlike the iPhone app store. Did Google just remove it from their store, and people are still able to install it if they can download it from other locations? Or I guess what I am asking, is to get an application on Android does it have to come from the Android store? Or could I make my own program and distribute it to all my friends without having to go through some Android app approval process.

You can make your own app and give it to people as you can install apps from an outside source.

Samsung Epic 4G Release Date Rumor of the Day Is August 21

Author admin    Category News     Tags , , ,

It pains me to post another one of these rumored release dates for the Samsung Epic 4G. At first it was getting around that the Epic 4G could get a release on August 11th, though that date is proving unlikely considering no announcement has come from Sprint. The latest date getting tossed around is August 21st, only coming as word from a source with no corroborating evidence.

Take this more as confirmation that you will have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on the full hardware QWERTY keyboard of the Epic 4G and less a reason to get your hopes up. We will file the August 21st release date among the biggest of rumors.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Announcement Coming in September?

Many are speculating that tomorrow’s US Samsung event will concern their Android MID and tablet line-up, but according to one “high-ranking official” within the company that won’t be the case, at least as far as the tablet is concerned. Instead the Galaxy Tab should be getting it’s announcement in about a month at the IFA expo next month in Berlin. The expo runs from September 3rd through 8th.

We’ll know for sure tomorrow whether or not the announcement comes sooner or later, but either way it looks like Samsung will keep their Q3 release timeframe as scheduled. Will the Galaxy Tab signal the beginning of a run of quality Android tablets including an upcoming device by Motorola?

Remember the Milk

Remember the Milk
list of android phones

Remember the milk (or Rtm for short) started out as kick ass web service for getting-things-done-fanatics and that web service is now accessible on all kinds of devices. Android is one of those platforms.

Apart from being a great list-management tool, rtm for android has few unique features that’s not available on other platforms. For starters it can remind you of tasks based on your location. Say that you’re passing by the hardware-store and you have some tasks associated to that hardware-store, Remember the milk will remind you when you’re getting close to it. Works like a charm.

Unfortunately all this goodness comes at a price. While the android-app itself is free, it requires a premium account at rtm to be able to use it. (You get a 10 day trial period when you install the application) I still love it though and can’t really picture my phone without it.
