HTC Wildfire Brings Pre-Paid Android to Telstra

Author admin    Category News     Tags , , , ,

We’ve known for a few weeks now that Telstra would be picking up the HTC Wildfire at some point this summer, but now an official date has been issued. Those in Australia will be able to pick up the handset starting August 24th, and it will be available on-contract as well as with a pre-paid plan. If you choose to go without the contract the phone will be on sale for 349 AUD.

The Wildfire, available in both “pure white” and “phantom black,” features a 3.2-inch QVGA display, 5MP camera, and Android 2.1. The phone will be exclusive to Telstra until November 15th.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
android

Found these the other day, looking through my archives for stuff needed for another project…

Awhile ago, I got asked to do up some samples to see if the famous Philip K Dick story, Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep could be adapted into comics form. For various reasons it was not to be, with me, though in a different form the publisher, BOOM! put out a book of it instead. My take was always going to be a little different, definitely not wanting to use every single word of prose but getting all the dialogue and descriptions as right as I could. Translations between mediums, I’m sure you’d all agree, should be about playing to the strengths of the new one, not just trying to force a square peg in a round hole, etc.

Android is reported to be making significant gains as ‘the more affordable’ smartphone option in Southeast Asia. The region is becoming well known for large number of mobile internet users, as mobile technology continues to leapfrog less mature fixed-line telephony to provide mass market internet access. Android pushes iPhone to less than majority of ad share
Android has grown enough to break the iPhone out of its majority of mobile ad share, Millenial Media found in its latest study. Google’s share of the US smartphone space saw it jump seven percent in August to reach 26 percent of ad traffic. iPhones still had a clear lead in share but were pushed back to under half at 48 percent with “flat” growth. The BlackBerry also grew slightly, but at 19 …

Can I program an Android application without actually having an Android phone?

Question by cuitarded: Can I program an Android application without actually having an Android phone?
Does the Android SDK contain anything to test your application on while developing an Android application (much like the iPhone does)?

I don’t own a phone with Android (I actually have an iPhone…) but I would like to program some Android apps, without burning money on a phone. When it comes time to test my application on a live phone I have plenty of friends that would be willing to be guinea pigs.

Answer by nuvious@ymail.com
Yes. The android SDK includes an emulator call AVD or Android Virtual Device. It is limited in some respects because it can’t receive calls or be moved around for GPS testing, but for simple games and web-apps it’s perfect for users who don’t want to invest in a development phone.

Here’s a website on how to use the AVD in the basic sense:

http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/avd.html

However I recommend using the Eclipse Android Development Tool (ADT) plugin for all your work as the AVD launcher is built right into the normal launch system for Eclipse. Here’s a page on how to install that:

http://developer.android.com/sdk/eclipse-adt.html

Obviously you’ll need to install Eclipse for Java Developers and the Android SDK first. If you haven’t done that yet, here are the pages you need to get that done:

http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html

One Click Root? Nexus One Does That Too

Author admin    Category News     Tags , ,

If you just nabbed a Nexus One either through Google’s developer dashboard or some other means, you may still be interested in rooting it. Although rooting the Nexus One is a lot easier than most other Android handsets to date, there’s just something about the ease of a one-click solution that makes rooting it a worry-free process.

Google Mobile Event August 12th, What Could they Be Announcing?

Author admin    Category News     Tags , , , , , ,

Invites are being sent out for a Google Mobile event to take place this Thursday, August 12th. They will be “unveiling a couple of cool new mobile features,” but little is known beyond that. So what could be so exciting that it warrants a press conference? I’m honestly at a loss, though we could be seeing some more of the functions showcased at Google I/O that didn’t quite make the initial Froyo cut. Your guess is as good as mine.

What could Google possible be announcing?

Whats the difference between a Samsung Androiod powered phone and a HTC Android powered phone?

Question by Tanyy(:: Whats the difference between a Samsung Androiod powered phone and a HTC Android powered phone?
Like ie: HTC Hero from Sprint with Android and the Samsung Moment from Sprint with Android.
I thought that all Android powered phones were HTC so whats the deal?
Thanks. :)

Android is an operating system, just like Blackberry phones use the Blackberry operating system, and many other smart phones use Windows Mobile operating system. Android is the same way, and can be found on many phones. The Droid is made by Motorola and it’s on that one too.

HTC just happens to have a lot of phones with Android on it.

Motorola Introduces the Droid 2 on Video

Author admin    Category News     Tags , , ,

We’ve finally gotten our first official promo video for the upcoming Droid 2 (two days, folks!) courtesy of its manufacturer Motorola. The clip is 1 minute long, but it’s business as usual: we’ve learned all that we care to learn through the countless “internal leaks” (yes, Verizon, I’m a strong believer that these leaks are intentional – smart marketing move!) and we just want to have this phone in our hands! A video should suffice for now, I suppose: the device comes out this Thursday (with early adopters being given the chance to open their wallets tomorrow).

Wish motorola made a decent phone like the Droid or Droid X for Sprint… HTC is nice, but I like Moto better.
