Do I need data plan if I purchase unlocked Android phone?

Author admin    Category General     Tags , , , , , ,

Question by John: Do I need data plan if I purchase unlocked Android phone?
I want to get Sony Xperia X10 or Nexus S but do I need the data plan to get started/activate? I’m going to purchase them unlocked for T-Mobile.

Because I’m definitely fine with Wi-Fi connections and don’t need the data plan.

Thanks in advance!
Would 200MB plan be enough or is unlimited plan a must?

Yeah, you’ll need a data plan. They’re required when you buy the phone from the actual dealer because there is no way to use the phone without using a data connection really. Otherwise, there’s not really a point in having the phone. Plus, with all of the syncing and apps that run in the background, if you don’t, your bill will be sky-high.

Though you may not download any apps while your not connected to Wifi, something like saving a contact or forgetting the unlock pattern to your phone could cause you to be charged.

Android phone are Google affiliated and you have the option to back your contacts up via google and if you forget the passcode to your phone, the only way unlock it is via your Gmail account, but the information has to be sent via the internet.

So, while you probably aren’t technically required to have a data package, it is indeed in your best interest.

Whilst you probably don’t need it per se there are going to be quite alot of functions that you won’t be able to use. I’d most probably get the 200mb data plan thats quite sufficient for web browsing and emails. Not sure where your located but if you don’t have a data plan and your phone uses data you’ll be paying the per mb charge which is extremely high.
